Today I walked 17.3 km according to the information paper but it seemed shorter. I think the paper lies sometimes. Well the paper also says that I am 2/3 done. 500+km done and only 252 to go.
Breakfast was leftover pizza. It wasn't good enough to get excited about. I miss some Oma's Pizza on Anna Maria Island! Spain pizza is sub par.
This is the one and only ripe blackberry bush I have seen. I ate a few. They were very tasty and I didn't die from eating berries off of a foreign plant.
The flat part is sadly over and over the next two days I gradually climb up hill. This mountain is even bigger than the ones on the first day but its gradual accent takes several days so it is not as difficult.
Astorga is a bigger town than I thought. I stayed at the municipal albergue. This albergue was huge, over 150 beds on 3 floors, kitchen, multiple patios and common areas and wifi. The albergue is owned by an association of friends of the camino.
Today was laundry in the washer machine day, €3. I hand wash a few things to get by but every four days or so I do a load in a washer then let it solar dry. Exciting stuff!
The archbishop's palace was designed by Gaudi in 1887 but wasn't finished till 1961. It's whimsical modern style is paired with medieval elements. It's too bad Gaudi and Walt Disney didn't live at the same time and get to work together.
The Cathedral of Astorga is a mishmash of styles as it parts of it date back to the 11th century yet it remained unfinished until the 18th century.
Glad my backpack isn't this big!
Astorga is known for its chocolate and I sampled the dark chocolate at two different chocolate shops. Both were yummy! Astorga also maintains most of its walked battlements. The part near the albergue has been turned into a park that runs the length of the city.
I made pasta and meat sauce for dinner with watermelon for dessert. The pasta wasn't very good but the watermelon was excellent.
