It was a little sad to say goodbye to my new friends Hugo and Peter at Aloha Hostel. The bus left Pamplona at two. I had a billion emotions running through me as we pulled out, nervous, excited, scared, worried...
St Jean is a traditional starting point of the Camino. It is on the northern, French side of the Pyrenees. The bus dropped us off an I blindly followed all the other people with large backpacks.
The first thing you need to do in town is get your pilgrim credential. You get this stamped everyday to proved you walked (or biked). I got a scallop shell for my backpack and a bed in the municipal auberge. Auberges are more bare bones than a hostel only providing a bed in a giant room of bunk beds and communal bathrooms. The sheets, if provided are not washed everyday. You are supposed to put your bedding on top.
I went out to walk a round town a bit. I walked up to the citadel and all around it. Inside it is a school that isn't open to the public.
I did a lap around town. Used the free wifi at the tourist center for a Facebook status. I tried the local hard cider. I didn't like it and stopped at a chocolate shop and bought one piece to get the taste out of my mouth.
In the municipal auberge I was in a room of 12 with a bunch of people from Spain, a nice lady from Hungry and 2 northern Italian guys.
We decided to get up at 5:30. Groan. We all went to bed very early.
