Friday, July 19: Villafranca Montes de Oca to Atapuerca

The camino right out of town was very steep. Then more up then steep down only to go right back up again. That was like the first 6km. The next 6 were nice and mostly flat. It looked a lot like Massachusetts and Connecticut today till I got within sight of the villages.

Lots of bugs, butterflies and flowers. Even wild strawberries.

Tonight's albergue in Atapuerca is called Albergue el Perigrino de Atapuerca. Really how do they come up with such clever names. Cost:€5.
This albergue is clean and cute. The rooms are small, 6 beds each and all the beds have an electrical outlet. There is a kitchen, laundry room and plenty of showers and toilets (with toilet seats!).  Its perfect except for two things. It's 2013 get wifi. And I think everyone in the area bought the same horrid mattresses from the same cheap supplier. They are the kind with uncomfortable springs and not enough padding. The mat on the floor in the church in Logroño was more comfortable.

I walked (camino shuffle style) around a few blocks checking out the food options. The store was small and I wasn't feeling like cooking. The first bar didn't serve dinner only tapas and bocadillos (sandwiches). I had a bocadillo for breakfast and lunch, not dinner too! The next place had a €10 pilgrim menu. The price is standard but I think it is a little steep. This was one of, if not the, best pilgrim meals yet. I had the pasta bolognese, "chicken in sauce" which came with fries and chocolate cake for dessert. The pasta came our so fast I am sure it was reheated but it was still better than any pasta I have cooked lately. One of the three pieces of chicken was a tad dry but whatever "sauce" it was cooked in more than made up for it. The flavor was delicious. I was glad there were fries just to soak them in the sauce.
