Saturday, July 13: Torres del Rio to Lorgorno

20.5km walked today!

I dragged my but out of bed at 7:15, still wanting more sleep. Roisin was downstairs by the pool. She said something terrible had happened at the bull run in Pamplona. The tv was on in the bar. I watched like 20 seconds of it and turned away knowing it wasn't good.  I am glad no one died but people (the crazy people who run) don't take the danger of running with the bulls seriously. This is dangerous. Don't do it!

I walk slow. This blog should be called the slowest camino ever. Or The Turtle Travels. Or something. Everyone passes me, I feel like. Oh well "just keep swimming".

Waking early is the way to go. It turned hot too quickly. Logically that would be the way to go. However I love to sleep in. Soooo...

The next town was Viana. I stopped for along time and had lunch and read. I was the only one sitting outside at this particular bar so they kept on forgetting about me. I had the "pasta with cream sauce" it came with a drink (orange juice) and a freezer section ice cream cone for dessert for €6.50. The pasta was ok. I don't know what the dark bits are and I'm not sure I want to know. They were not great but mostly eatable. The things that look like potatoes are chunks of cheese. The OJ was delicious though.

The road here was flat and long. I read my kindle and walked at the same time. This sounds ridiculous but my feet didn't hurt as bad and I made better time. I'm sure I got weird looks but I didn't notice.

The last 4 km were such a tease. I walked through the park at the edge of the city and it seemed like I should be there already. But no! More walking.

Interesting fact: Logorno is a sister city to Darmstadt in Germany where I did a summer program for college (in 2002).

The first albergue I went to was full. They sent me 200m down the road to Albergue Parroquial de Santiago. It is an albergue that is at the Catholic Church and is by donation only. So you pay what you think is right. There was one room of bunks but having arrived so late (just before 7) there was only space left sleeping on mats on the floor of one of meeting rooms. Maria and Roisin were here too!

Dad if you do the camino you should stay here.

Mass was at 7:30 but I missed it because I was in the shower, which for some reason the hot water was not working.

Dinner at 8:30 was included. Water and wine, a lovely salad of lettuce tomato, onions and cucumbers, rice with mixed vegetables and watermelon for dessert. It was all yummy!

The priest and his trainees dined with us. There were probably about 40 packed at two tables in the dinning room.
After dinner was evening prayer. Those who did not want to go to evening prayer got to start on the dishes. I chose evening prayer. Everyone took part saying different prayers in different languages.

We then got our pilgrim passport stamped. We were allowed down in to the crypt under the alter to see the 1600th century cross and Mary statue. All the while the priest sang in Spanish. He had a nice voice even if the songs were deep and solemn.

The dishes were done by the time we got back but I helped the hospitalera (the lady who volunteers to run the albergue) set up the stuff for breakfast.

It was 10:30 when I went to bed. I slept really well on the floor. I was so tired I could have probably slept anywhere.
